Why you didn’t get the promotion

When I was a few years into my career, it was time for me to move up and get promoted.  It was annual review time, so a perfect opportunity to have that discussion with my manager.

I had invested time in my work, stayed late to finish assignments, and said yes whenever I was asked to do something, so I figured I’m a shoo-in.

I didn’t get promoted.

My problem?  I didn’t invest time in the little things, like building a social relationship with my manager and colleagues.  When others were going for coffee or lunch, I was sitting at my desk, working.

Here’s what I learned: promotions aren’t based on merit – they’re judgment calls.

And it has a lot more to do with what people think of you than your accomplishments.

Don’t get me wrong.  Hard work and results matter. But they’re not the differentiator. They’re expected.  What really tips the scales comes down to four things:

1. Likeability

You don’t need to be everyone’s best friend, but if working with you feels painful, you will not get promoted. What does? People who make the Boss’ life easier, not harder.

2. Looking the Part

Is it fair? No. Is it real? Absolutely. People get promoted when they already look the part. Think about the movie Bohemian Rhapsody.  Rami Malik looked just like Freddie Mercury.  So, how you show up – your presence, communication, composure – all of this signals whether people can picture you representing the company (especially in higher stakes executive roles).

3. Confidence and Presence

This isn’t about being loud or having all the answers. It’s about being steady under pressure. Leaders want to trust that when things get chaotic, you won’t. A calm, confident presence is worth more than a ton of output.

4. The Ability to Get Stuff Done

This is not about tasks.  It’s about outcomes. Do you cut through noise? Solve problems without being asked? Navigate personalities without blowing things up? People who reliably move work across the finish line get noticed.

Bottom line?

Just like I learned, promotions aren’t won by who works the hardest.  They’re won by those who are trusted the most. If you want to move up, focus on the things that make people want to bet on you: be likeable, look like a leader, act like a leader, and (of course) get results without drama.

Good luck!

LinkedIn Labour Market Report

The January 2026 LinkedIn labour market report tracks global hiring trends and provides insight into how you might be able to prepare for these trends.

No surprise – AI is the key topic.  AI is creating more jobs than it is replacing, and (no surprise) much of this focus is in software engineering. Despite this, AI adoption is low and concentrated in a few functions.

Canada lost 84,000 jobs in February

Canada’s labour market continued to struggle in February, with total employment falling by 84k jobs nationwide, reflecting softness in manufacturing and economic uncertainty.  The national unemployment rate rose to 6.7%. Job losses were in full-time employment (-100k jobs), offset by gains in P/T jobs (+16k).

What happened? Most job losses were concentrated in youth and core-men (25-55) and in industries that skew male, such as manufacturing, construction, retail and hospitality. Employment for women was largely unchanged. StatsCan reported almost 25% of job seekers have been unemployed for at least 27 weeks (6 months).

What does this mean for HR and hiring managers? A bigger applicant pool and likely some easing on wage pressure in competitive roles and industries.

Woman loses her life savings in remote job scam

Job scams are talked about ad nauseum, and you wonder … how can normally intelligent people fall for them?  Typically it’s when someone is vulnerable (unemployed and job hunting) that it’s likely to happen.

Here’s a story about a woman who thought she had a legitimate job at Facebook, only to discover she lost her life savings.

This isn’t the first scam and it won’t be the last, but the more you learn about these scams, the better protected you’ll be.

How to combine AI and people in your job search

Your job search should use a combination of AI and people, so that you can maximize results.  But when and how should you use each?

AI is great for fundamentals:

  • Doing research
  • Preparing for interviews
  • Creating or updating your resume or other communication

People are great for human stuff:

  • Listening and providing feedback
  • Managing the emotional ups and downs
  • Sharing insight that might trigger an opportunity

Bottom line?  Use both.

People are great at giving perspective, providing support or helping you network.  AI is great at helping you start or providing direction to your search.  It can process tons of info quickly.

It’s important to have a strong support group like your family or good friends.  Remember also to pay-it-forward after you’ve landed your next job.

The Beatles: Anthology

This 9-part docu-series on Disney+ is a must-watch for any Beatles fan.

Tons of behind-the-scenes info from the Beatles themselves, including practice and recording sessions.

Highly recommended.

Captive Audience: A Real American Horror Story

No other way to describe this 3-part docu-series on Disney+ other than weird.

In 1972, a 7-year old boy vanishes for 7 years, and then returns. Then, years later, two other strange things happen to the same family that are unbelievable.

Watch it.
