Issue 30 (Aug 2026) – The Magic of Birthday Cake

Little things matter more than we think.

At one company I worked at, birthdays became a built-in culture driver.

At 2pm on your birthday, the entire team would pause, gather around, sing Happy Birthday, and share cake for a few minutes.

It wasn’t fancy – just a moment to connect.

It worked because it was simple, inclusive, and genuine.

Everyone has a birthday.
Everyone enjoys a break.
And everyone loves feeling special.

You’re probably wondering why I’m mentioning this.

Many companies invest heavily in culture, planning events, lunch & learns, and open-door policies.

Each of these things are good – don’t get me wrong. But they can also feel forced. We’ve all been to events that feel like it’s a chore rather than a fun event.

Birthday cake? Simple. Relatable. Memorable. People feel valued, and isn’t that what we’re trying to achieve with culture?

What’s the lesson?

If you want better culture, bake it in. Literally. 🤪

Key question: What’s YOUR favourite cake? Send me a reply.
(Mine is NY style cheesecake)

Leadership vs. Management : Why the Difference Matters.

What’s the difference between leadership and management?

Leadership and management are often used interchangeably, but they serve different purposes within an organization. Both are essential, and the most successful business leaders develop strengths in both areas.

What is Management?

Management is about delivering results through planning, organization, and execution. Managers establish processes, allocate resources, monitor performance, and ensure work is completed efficiently. Their primary goal is to create consistency, productivity, and operational excellence.

What is Leadership?

Leadership, on the other hand, is about influencing people toward a shared vision. Leaders inspire, motivate, and guide others through change and uncertainty. Their primary goal is to build commitment, develop people, and create alignment around a common purpose.

What’s the Difference?

A simple way to think about the difference is this: management focuses on how work gets done; leadership focuses on why it matters and who is doing it.

Organizations need both. Strong management without leadership can create efficiency but often struggles to generate innovation, engagement, or adaptability. Strong leadership without management can inspire people but may fall short when it comes to execution and accountability. Sustainable success requires both the discipline to deliver results and the ability to bring people along on the journey.

How professionals can be more effective in each role

To become a better manager:

  • Set clear expectations and measurable goals.
  • Create systems and processes that support performance.
  • Hold people accountable while providing support.
  • Monitor progress and address issues quickly.

To become a better leader:

  • Communicate a clear and compelling vision.
  • Build trust through consistency and integrity.
  • Listen actively and seek diverse perspectives.
  • Invest in developing and empowering others.
  • Demonstrate resilience during periods of change.

The best leaders understand that leadership and management are complementary, not competing, skills. When organizations develop people who can both execute effectively and inspire others, they create stronger cultures, better business outcomes, and a more engaged workforce.

12 Seconds to Impress: How to Structure Your Resume for the Modern Recruiter

In today’s hyper-competitive, tech-driven job market, your resume is being scanned, not read. According to recent workforce studies, recruiters and hiring managers spend an average of just 12 seconds on a resume before deciding whether to advance a candidate or hit delete.

Worse yet, the widespread use of artificial intelligence has created a unique dilemma: AI tools may screen out unpolished applications that should get through for a first glance.

To survive, your resume needs to instantly deliver exactly what employers are looking for. Here is a breakdown of what recruiters typically notice first, and how to structure your resume to hit those marks fast.

The 12-Second Heatmap: What Recruiters Actually Look At

When a hiring manager opens your resume, his or her eyes naturally map out a predictable path. Within those crucial first seconds, s/he is scanning for four specific pillars:

  • Your Current Title & Company: They want to see if your current job aligns with the open role.
  • Job History: Rapid-fire job hopping stands out instantly. They look at your timeline to gauge stability.
  • Core Technical Skills & Keywords: They scan for specific tools, platforms, or methodologies mandatory for the role.
  • Impact Metrics: Their eyes naturally gravitate toward numbers rather than blocks of text that describe your duties.

Blueprint for a High-Speed Resume Structure

Get rid of dense paragraphs and chaotic formatting. Use a clean, highly structured layout designed for scannability.

A. The “Above-the-Fold” Header & Summary

Treat the top third of your resume like prime real-estate.

  • Header: Keep your contact info minimal. Include your name, phone number, location (City, State/Province), and LinkedIn URL. Skip the full street address.
  • Target Title: Clearly state the role you want or your expertise, right below your name (e.g. Global Tax Director).
  • Professional Summary: Kill the “Objective Statement”. Instead, write an impactful two-to-three-sentence hook that highlights your years of experience, expertise, and a major career achievement. Think of this as your “how I can help you” summary.

B. The Strategic Skills Core

Don’t bury your skills at the very bottom of page two.

  • List a Core Competencies or Skills section directly beneath your summary (or maybe on one side).
  • Use specific keywords right from the job description (e.g., ASPE, Market Strategy Development, food technology sales). If the job description uses a specific term, match it exactly so both AI and people check that box instantly.

C. The Professional Experience Layout

This is where the 12-second decision is truly made. Use the same format to make it easy to read. For example:

Job Title | Company Name | City, Prov/State

Month 202X – Present

  • Be action oriented: Start every bullet point with a strong action verb. Avoid passive phrases like “Responsible for managing.”
  • List results: Roughly 50% of your bullet points should feature a metric. (e.g., “Led a cross-functional team of 6 to deploy a new CRM, reducing client onboarding time by 22%.”)

It’s all about Personality

With so many applicants using AI tools to write their resumes, resume language and formatting is looking very similar. To stand out, bring in your personality:

  • Avoid AI “Buzzwords”: Get rid of AI-phrases like synergistic team player, dynamic go-getter, or thought leader. They take up space without adding value.
  • Name the Problem: Instead of writing a perfect bullet point, be real. For example, “after losing our key customer (45% of our revenue), I implemented stringent cost cutting measures to help preserve the company and jobs”. This helps separate you through real-world grit that AI can’t easily replicate.

Do a quick 12-Second Check Before You Hit Send

Before you send your next application, open your resume and stare at it for 12 seconds. If you can’t easily identify who you are, what you excel at, where you’ve done it, and the measurable impact you made, restructure it. Simplicity, a clean layout, and data are your best tools to survive the scan and land the interview.

Watch: Apex

Apex is a 2026 survival action-thriller starring Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton (RocketMan).

The story follows Sasha, a grieving rock climber who seeks solace on a solo expedition in the Australian wilderness, only to be stalked and hunted for sport by a sadistic serial killer.

I liked it. Both Charlize and Taron put in good performances. I used to think that streaming movies weren’t any good, but lately they’re better.

I think you’ll find it entertaining.

Listen: Bobby Bonilla Day

This is an interesting story.

Every July 1st, retired Major League Baseball player Bobby Bonilla receives a direct deposit from the New York Mets despite not having played for the franchise for a quarter of a century.

Sports fans celebrate this date with a mix of hilarity and absolute bewilderment as “Bobby Bonilla Day,” universally mocking it as the ultimate symbol of front-office incompetence.

However, that’s not quite true.

This contract wasn’t a classic Mets blunder; it was a highly calculated financial maneuver backed by standard accounting logic.
